An Unplanned End to Our Silver Crown Run
Our Midwest racing trip didn't quite go as planned, but we wanted to share an update on what happened.
We originally traveled to Indiana for the Hoosier Hundred on May 26. Unfortunately, rain forced the event to be canceled. Rather than make the trip back to Arizona with all of our equipment, we stored our RV and race trailer at a friend's house and flew home to Phoenix.
On June 5, we flew back to Indiana, picked up our RV and trailer, met up with our spotter, and headed to St. Louis for the Route 66 Classic at Worldwide Technology Raceway.
Things started off well. The car felt good in practice, and we were happy with how it performed in qualifying. We were looking forward to the feature and felt like we had a competitive car.
During the race, everything was going smoothly until I headed into Turn 3. I had checked the brakes on the backstretch, and they felt normal. But when it was time to slow for the corner, the brake pedal went straight to the floor.
My first instinct was to steer the car toward the infield grass to avoid taking anyone else out. Unfortunately, the weight of the fuel shifted the car back up the track, and we hit the outside wall.
After the crash, I was transported to the hospital, where X-rays and CT scans confirmed a fractured rib and a fractured ankle. Considering the impact, I was fortunate that the injuries weren't more serious.
The car, however, sustained extensive damage and was ultimately a total loss. Because of that, we made the decision to head back to Arizona rather than continue the remainder of the Silver Crown pavement schedule as we had originally planned.
This definitely wasn't the outcome we were hoping for, but that's part of racing. Sometimes things happen that are completely out of your control. We're thankful for the track safety crew, the medical staff, our family, friends, and everyone who reached out to check on us after the crash. Your support has meant a lot during my recovery.
The focus now is healing, rebuilding, and figuring out the next steps. We appreciate everyone who has followed along with our season, and we look forward to getting back to Silver Crown racing when the time is right.
In the meantime, we're looking forward to getting back on the track in the sprint car at Western World, October 22–24. We hope to see many of you there!
